What Is a Percentage?

A percentage is simply a fraction out of 100. "47%" means 47 out of every 100. This makes it easy to compare proportions regardless of the total โ€” 47% of 1,000 is the same proportion as 47% of 2.

The word "percent" comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred."

% = (part รท whole) ร— 100

Finding % of a Number

The most common operation: you want to know what X% of Y is.

X% of Y = (X รท 100) ร— Y

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: What is 15% of $240?

Step 1: 15 รท 100 = 0.15

Step 2: 0.15 ร— 240 = 36

Answer: $36

To quickly estimate in your head: move the decimal two places left, then multiply. 15% of 240 โ†’ 0.15 ร— 240 = 15 ร— 24 = 360, then divide by 10 โ†’ 36.

Percentage Change

How do you measure the change between an old value and a new value?

% change = ((new โˆ’ old) รท old) ร— 100

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: Stock went from $50 to $65. What's the % gain?

Step 1: 65 โˆ’ 50 = 15

Step 2: 15 รท 50 = 0.30

Step 3: 0.30 ร— 100 = 30%

Answer: 30% gain

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: Rent went from $1,200 to $1,380. What's the % increase?

Step 1: 1,380 โˆ’ 1,200 = 180

Step 2: 180 รท 1,200 = 0.15

Step 3: 0.15 ร— 100 = 15%

Answer: 15% increase

Reverse Percentage (Finding the Original)

Sometimes you know the final number and the percentage, and you need to find the original. This is common in tax situations, markups, and discounts.

Original = Final รท (1 + X%)

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: You paid $124.99 total, which includes 25% tax. What was the pre-tax price?

Step 1: 25% = 0.25. So 1 + 0.25 = 1.25

Step 2: 124.99 รท 1.25 = 99.99

Pre-tax price: $99.99

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: Item is 30% off, sale price is $70. What was the original?

30% off โ†’ you pay 70% of original. So:

Original = 70 รท 0.70 = 100

Original price: $100

Percentage Increase & Decrease

To increase a number by a percentage:

Increased = Original ร— (1 + X%)

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: Salary of $55,000 with 8% raise. New salary?

1 + 0.08 = 1.08

55,000 ร— 1.08 = 59,400

New salary: $59,400

To decrease by a percentage (multiply by less than 1):

Decreased = Original ร— (1 โˆ’ X%)

๐Ÿ“Œ Example: $4,200 rent with 5% discount for paying early. Final rent?

1 โˆ’ 0.05 = 0.95

4,200 ร— 0.95 = 3,990

Final rent: $3,990

Compound Percentage Growth

Interest, inflation, and investment returns compound over time. The formula:

Final = Initial ร— (1 + r)^t

Where r = rate per period, t = number of periods.

InitialRateTimeFormulaResult
$10,0007% / year10 years10,000 ร— (1.07)^10$19,672
$10,0007% / year20 years10,000 ร— (1.07)^20$38,696
$10,00010% / year10 years10,000 ร— (1.10)^10$25,937

๐Ÿ’ก Rule of 72: To estimate how long it takes to double your money at a given rate, divide 72 by the rate. At 7% โ†’ 72 รท 7 = ~10.3 years to double. At 6% โ†’ 12 years. Simple and accurate for rates under 15%.
