How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the United States, tipping is expected for most services: 15–20% for restaurant service, 15–18% for taxi/rideshare, $1–2 per drink for bartenders, 15–20% for hair/beauty services, and $2–5 per night for hotel housekeeping.

To calculate a tip mentally: for 20%, simply divide the bill by 5. For 15%, divide by 10 (giving you 10%), then add half of that. For a $60 bill: 20% = $12; 15% = $6 + $3 = $9. To split the check evenly between people, divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of people.

In most countries outside the US (Japan, most of Europe, China, Australia), tipping is not expected or is uncommon. In some places a service charge is already included in the bill — always check before tipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard tip percentage in the US?+
15% is considered the minimum for acceptable service; 18–20% is standard for good service; 25%+ is for exceptional service. For poor service, it is acceptable to tip less, though speaking with a manager is often more constructive.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?+
Etiquette guides vary. Technically, tipping on the pre-tax amount is correct. Practically, for a typical meal the difference is small (a few cents). Most Americans tip on the post-tax total for simplicity.
How do I split the bill evenly?+
Add the bill amount plus your chosen tip percentage, then divide by the number of people. Example: $80 bill + 20% tip = $96 total ÷ 4 people = $24 per person.
Is 15% still an acceptable tip?+
15% was once the standard but 20% is now more common in the US, partly driven by digital payment screens that start suggestions at 18–20%. For table service, 18–20% for good service is the current norm.
