How to Calculate Your Ovulation Day

Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before your next period — not 14 days after your last one. For a 28-day cycle: ovulation falls on day 14. For a 32-day cycle: ovulation falls on day 18 (32 − 14 = 18). The fertile window spans 5 days before ovulation plus the ovulation day itself, since sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract.

How to use this calculator: Enter the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and your average cycle length. The calculator will show your estimated ovulation date, your fertile window, and when your next period is due.

Cycle lengths vary from 21 to 40 days and can change month to month due to stress, illness, travel, or hormonal changes. For the most reliable ovulation tracking, combine calendar calculation with basal body temperature (BBT) charting and ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), which detect the LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my ovulation date?+
Subtract 14 from your cycle length to find the day of ovulation counting from the first day of your period. For a 28-day cycle: day 14. For a 30-day cycle: day 16. For a 35-day cycle: day 21. Your fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation plus the ovulation day.
How long does the fertile window last?+
The fertile window lasts about 6 days — the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive 3–5 days inside the female reproductive tract, while the egg only survives 12–24 hours after release.
Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?+
It is very unlikely but not impossible if your cycle length varies. If your cycle is shorter one month, ovulation may happen earlier, making unprotected sex earlier in the cycle result in pregnancy. Irregular cycles make calendar methods less reliable.
What if my cycles are irregular?+
With irregular cycles, calendar-based ovulation prediction is less accurate. Use ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) to detect the LH surge, or track basal body temperature daily. Apps that combine multiple signals are more reliable than calendar math alone.
