Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from your height and weight that estimates body fat. The formula is BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². In imperial units: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / height (inches)².
The World Health Organization defines four categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), and Obese (30 and above). A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is the healthy range for most adults.
BMI is a quick screening tool but has real limitations. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored. Muscular athletes can have a high BMI without excess fat. For a full picture, combine BMI with waist circumference and consult a healthcare provider.
